“Mineral is the safe one, chemical is the bad one.” If that is the version of sunscreen you have picked up online, you are not alone — and it is costing people good skin days. Some of the gentlest, most elegant sunscreens in the world are made with so-called chemical filters. And some of the breakouts blamed on mineral SPF have nothing to do with the mineral at all.
Here is what the labels actually mean, the honest pros and cons of each type, and why Korean sunscreen genuinely does feel different on the skin.
The two families (and the hybrid in the middle)
Every sunscreen on earth works using UV filters. There are only two kinds.
Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide)
The good: they start working the moment they are on, they are extremely stable, and they have one of the lowest irritation profiles going — which is why they are the usual choice for reactive skin, rosacea-prone skin and freshly treated skin.
The trade-offs: white cast, especially on medium and deeper skin tones. Heavier, more “present” textures. And because you need a lot of powder to reach SPF 50, the formula around it tends to be rich — more on that below.
Organic filters (the ones called “chemical”)
“Organic” here is the chemistry meaning — carbon-based — not the food-shop meaning. These filters absorb UV and release it as a tiny amount of harmless heat.
The good: weightless textures, no white cast, and no colour limitations, so they suit every skin tone. Because they feel nice, people actually reapply them — and reapplication is where sun protection is won or lost.
The trade-offs: you need to apply them roughly 15–20 minutes before sun exposure. A few of the older ones can sting around the eyes. And a small number of people are sensitive to specific filters.
Hybrid (a bit of both)
Some formulas combine a little zinc with organic filters to get robustness without the heaviness. Worth knowing the category exists — though, as it happens, none of the sunscreens we currently stock are hybrids. They are either fully mineral or fully organic.
Myth 1: minerals bounce UV off your skin like a mirror
Lovely image. Not what happens. When researchers actually measured it, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide reflected only around 4–5% of UV — less than an SPF 2. The other 95-odd percent is absorbed, exactly like the filters people call chemical (Cole, Shyr and Ou-Yang, Photodermatology, Photoimmunology & Photomedicine, 2016).
The mirror effect is real — but it happens in visible light, not UV. That is the white cast. It is the reflection you can see, doing nothing at all for your sun protection.
Myth 2: mineral sunscreen clogs pores
This one is half true, and the half that is wrong matters.
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are inert mineral particles. There is no evidence that the filters themselves block pores — zinc oxide has been used in soothing skin preparations for decades. The problem is what has to go around them. To suspend 10–25% mineral powder and still have something spreadable, formulators reach for silicones, waxes and heavy esters. That base is what feels occlusive. Stick formats need even more wax to stay solid.
Add the fact that mineral formulas are harder to remove fully, and you have the classic combination behind “mineral broke me out”: a rich base, often tinted, not properly cleansed off at night.
So why does Korean sunscreen feel so much better?
Because Korean formulators have more to work with, and they have had it for longer.
In Korea and here in the UK and EU, UV filters are assessed as cosmetic ingredients — a safety review, then onto an approved list. In the United States, sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug, so each filter needs its own federal approval. The result: until June 2026, no genuinely new filter had been added to the American list since the late 1990s.
Meanwhile Korean and European brands have been building formulas around a modern toolkit — filters such as Uvinul A Plus, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Tinosorb S and M — which are photostable, gentle, and cosmetically far more elegant. That is the real reason a Korean SPF 50+ can feel like a serum while an older-generation one feels like a raincoat.
And the protection is measured the same way: a Korean SPF 50+ and a European SPF 50+ are both tested to the same international standard, ISO 24444.
PA++++ versus the UVA circle
You will see both on Korean labels, and they are not the same thing.
The UVA in a circle used across Europe is a ratio: UVA protection must be at least one third of the SPF. An SPF 15 and an SPF 50+ can both carry it, while offering very different absolute UVA protection.
PA++++ is an absolute threshold — the top grade of a four-level Japanese scale, and the one you want for daily use. In practice, a PA++++ label tells you more about UVA protection than the circle does.
How to choose yours
Reactive, red or easily irritated skin — go mineral

Two things that matter more than the type you choose
Apply enough, and top it up. Around two finger-lengths for the face and neck. Most people apply roughly a third of the tested amount, which quietly turns an SPF 50 into something far lower.
Take it off properly. Modern sunscreens are built to resist water and sweat, so a splash of water will not shift them. A gentle oil cleanser first, then your usual cleanser, removes the lot — and removes most of the “my sunscreen broke me out” problem with it.
