Back to Basics: How to Build a Simple, Effective Routine

Back to Basics: How to Build a Simple, Effective Routine

We get it — “build a skincare routine” sounds easy until you actually try it. Suddenly you’re staring at 20 serums, 5 cleansers, and a mountain of advice that contradicts itself. Should you double cleanse? What even is an essence? How many steps is too many?

Skincare shouldn’t feel like a science project — and it doesn’t have to. At IrelKGlow we believe skincare should be simple, effective, and tailored to you. Strip it back to basics and healthy skin is genuinely easy to achieve — no 10-step ritual required. Here are the only four steps you really need.

Applying a simple skincare routine

Why simplicity wins

Your skin doesn’t need 12 serums — it needs balance. Pile on too many products, especially overlapping actives, and you risk irritation, breakouts and a confused barrier. A simple, well-chosen routine saves time and money and helps your skin thrive naturally.

The core 4-step routine

1. Cleanser (AM + PM)

Cleansing the face with water

Removes dirt, oil and impurities. Oily/combination: a gentle foaming gel. Dry/sensitive: a hydrating cream or balm cleanser. Tip: double cleanse at night if you wear SPF or makeup.

For dry or mature skin you don’t always need a water-based cleanser in the morning — a splash of cold water can be enough. If you feel product build-up or layered serums overnight, use a gentle cleanser.

2. Target product (AM + PM)

Applying a treatment serum

This step treats your specific concerns — a toner, essence or serum, depending on your goals. Mature skin: peptides in the morning or a retinoid at night. Oily/acne-prone: oil-control or pore-minimising serums. Pigmentation or dullness: niacinamide or vitamin C to brighten and even tone.

3. Moisturiser (AM + PM)

Keeps your barrier healthy and prevents dehydration. Oily: lightweight gel. Dry: richer cream or emulsion. Sensitive: fragrance-free, barrier-repairing formulas. (Some moisturisers already include peptides or vitamin C — check labels to avoid duplication.)

4. SPF (AM only)

The non-negotiable step — protects against premature ageing and UV damage. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, every single day (even when it’s cloudy). That’s it. Really.

Optional add-ons (when you’re ready)

Using a cotton pad in a skincare routine

Once your 4-step routine feels consistent, introduce extras one at a time:

  • Exfoliant: 1–2×/week to brighten or reduce congestion (AHA/BHA).
  • Eye cream: if you struggle with dryness, puffiness or dark circles.

Think of these as boosters — not essentials.

How to stick to it

Diverse group of women with healthy skin
  • Start small: don’t add new products all at once.
  • Keep them visible: place products where you’ll actually use them (next to your toothbrush).
  • Listen to your skin: if it feels tight, dry or irritated, pull back and simplify.

Skincare is a long game, not a sprint. Consistency is key — it’s like any relationship; it needs commitment.

Final thoughts

Building a routine doesn’t have to be complicated — it just has to make sense for you. Four steps — cleanse, treat, moisturise, protect — are enough to transform your skin when done consistently. Simple really does work. — Irel x
